Lecture 3 Flashcards
Quantitative Characteristics
pre-determined questions - instrument data: performance, attitude, observational, census analysis: statistical interpretation: statistical
Mixed Methods Characteristics
both qualitative and quantitative
questions: open and closed
data: multiple forms
analysis: statistical and text
interpretation: across database
Qualitative Characteristics
emerging
questions: open ended
data: interview, observation, document, audio-visual
analysis: text & image
interpretation: themes, patterns
What are the three primary mixed methods models?
Convergent parallel
Explanatory sequential
Exploratory sequential
Convergent Parallel
quantitative and qualitative collected same time, merge in interpretation phase
(collection occurs at same time, then compare and relate to interpret)
- involves the same or parallel variables, concepts or constructs
Explanatory Sequential
quantitative first, explained further with qualitative data
Exploratory Sequential
qualitative first, used to build second quantitative stage (eg. instrument)
Transformative Mixed Methods
uses a theoretical lens
Embedded Mixed Methods
one or other within larger design, support role
Multiphase Mixed Methods
common in evaluation and program interventions, occurs over time
What does the theory of mixed methods include?
Deductive (quantitative), inductive (qualitative)
Social Science Theory Use (p. 69)
overarching framework (model, theory or concept) from which the research draws upon
Transformative Paradigm Theory Use (p. 70)
health/marginalized groups and underlying assumptions about power, oppression (human rights, justice)
Mixed Methods
involves both qualitative and quantitative data collection in response to research questions or hypotheses
- includes both forms of data analysis
- rigorous data collection and analysis
- the two forms of data are integrated
- prodedures
- informed by a philosophical world view or a theory
Example of Mixed Methods
Health perceptions of women 45 years and older
- survey
- focus groups
- follow up survey and interviews with re those women experiencing precarious employment
