Lecture #3 - Flashcards
What Are The Three Core Principles Of The Mind As An Energy System?…
- Instinctual Drives
- Freud’s View of Mental Energy
- Energy Conservation
Hysteria (Conversion Disorder)
● Freud initially studied hysteria when it was believed by some that hysterical individuals were faking their symptoms.
● Modern research has provided evidence to support Freud’s theories about emotional and motor connections in the brain.
Prevailing Belief
- People are inherently good, but society corrupts them.
Freud’s Belief
○These drives are powerful and instinctual but often clash with societal norms.
○ Humans possess inborn sexual and aggressive drives that are a natural part
of their nature.
Pleasure Principle
○Individuals are driven to seek pleasurable gratification of their inborn drives.
○The mind instinctively seeks satisfaction without concern for societal restrictions.
Role of Society
○Society teaches individuals that many natural drives are socially unacceptable.
○Maintains norms and taboos that reinforce this lesson.
Two Conceptual Models of the Mind
- Levels of Consciousness
- Functional Systems in the Mind
Conscious
Thoughts we are currently aware of.
Preconscious
Mental content we can become aware of easily if we focus on it.
Unconscious
Parts of the mind we are unaware of and can access only under special circumstances.
Id
- The primitive, instinctual part of the mind driven by pleasure and desires
Ego
- The rational part that mediates between the id and reality.
Superego
- The moral and ethical component, internalizing societal norms.
Levels of Consciousness
- Slips of the tongue
- Neuroses and psychoses
- Works of art
- Rituals
- Dreams
Manifest Content
- The storyline of a dream.
