Lecture 3 Flashcards

Cardiorespiratory Fitness

1
Q

What is cardiorespiratory fitness?

A

It is related to the ability to perform large muscle, dynamic, moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise for prolonged periods of time

Q

What are the gold standard for measuring CRF?

A
  • Max volume of oxygen consumed per unit time-VO2max
  • Measured in ml/kg/min (relative) or L/min (absolute)

Q

What is VO2 max?

A

HR linear relation to workload, multi-stage - increasing workload each time, last two workloads should see a plateau

Q

What are the common equations for estimating HRmax?

A

Healthy people = 208-(0.7times age)
Broad range of age and fitness levels = 207-(0.7 times age)
Beta-blocker = 164-(0.7 times age)

Q

What is a sub-maximal exercise test?

A

Client exercises to less than 85% of max (or predicted max) HR

8
Q

Who do we make the decision to use maximal vs submaximal?

A

Depends on:
-reason for test
- risk level of client
- availability of appropriate equipment and personnel
- appropriateness of working some individuals to the point of volitional fatigue

9
Q

What assumptions do we make when estimating VO2 max in submaximal test?

A
  • Steady-state HR
  • HR and work rate are a linear relationship
  • Predicted max HR is accurate
  • Mechanical efficiencies same for everyone
  • Not on medications that alter HR response to exercise
  • Not using high quantities of caffeine or high in temperature environment

Q

What are field tests?

A
  • Can involve running, walking, stepping etc.
  • Usually do not monitor HR, BP, and ECG during performance
  • Require clients to accurately measure post-exercise HR

  • 6 min walk test
  • 20 metre shuttle run (beep test)

Q

What is the bruce protocol treadmill tests?

A

Start at 1.7mph at 10%, then increase by 2% every 3 min, we want them to be able to last 6-12 minutes, if they can’t last 6 min, use the modified protocol
