lecture 3 Flashcards
what is the synapse?
microscopic gap between the transmitting cell and the receiving cell
the arrival of the action potential cuases a conformational change that allows neurotransmitter (stored in the axon terminal) to be released into the gap
the nt diffuses across hte gap rapdily since the gap is so small
where are neurotransmitters stored?
in these synaptic vesicles, when the action potential arrives the vesicles binds with the axon terminal and releases into the gap. some of the nt’s bind with the dendrite of the receiving neuron inorder to open some ion channels and cause another change in potential
what is ionotropic transmission?
an ion channel linked receptor
what is metabotropic transmission?
competitive binding? 2 types what are the differences
non competitive binding? two types what are the differences?
transmitters- Ach?
