What is transgendered?
A person whose self-image or gender identity is not traditionally associated with their assigned gender at birth
What is gender queer or pangender?
A person who rejects the gender binary and identifies as being both male and female or as being neither a man or a woman
What is cisgendered?
A person whose self-image or gender identity are congruent Non-transgendered individuals Non-pathologizing alternative to: -bioligical male/female -genetic male/female -natural male/female
What is transsexual?
Someone who desires to align their physical self with their self-perception by altering their anatomy; this an be achieved through hormones and surgery
What is a crossdresser?
A person who dresses in the clothing of the opposite biological gender
What is a transvestite?
Someone who achieves sexual pleasure through the use of clothing or personal adornments of the other gender
What is a Drag?
Originated in the theater world:
- dresses as a girl
- theatrical and stereotypical
- corporate drag, military drag, etc
What is Gender Identity Disorder?
Being unhappy with the gender you were assigned physically or anatomically
-incongruence between sex and gender

What is the DSM 5 gender disorder?
Gender dysphoria
Where do we see the diagnosis of Gender Incongruence?
In Europe
What are the Gender Identity Disorder diagnostic characteristics?
A. A strong and persistent cross-gender identification (not merely a desire for perceived cultural advantages of being the other sex)
B. Persistent discomfort with his or her sex or sense of inappropriateness in the gender role of that sex
C. The disturbance is not concurrent with a physical intersex condition
D. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
Difference criteria for adults and children
What are the Gender dysphoria diagnostic characteristics for children?
A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, of at least 6 months of disorder
Reduction of stigma of transgender individuals
What does natal mean?
Relating to the place or time of one’s birth
What is the suicide rate of trans teens in NYC?
Ideation in ½
Attempt in ¼
What are hormonotherapy considerations?
Irreversible changes from male to female is breast tissue and erectile abilities
-still needs prostate exams
Irreversible changes from female to male is voice, cliteroal changes, male pattern baldness
-needs pap smears
