Lecture 28 Flashcards
Renal system
Where are the kidneys
retroperitoneal (behind the abdominal organs in their peritoneal cavity)
ureter
from kidneys to urinary bladder
urethra
urinary bladder to external environment
General Function of Kidneys
- Regulation of extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure
- Regulation of osmolarity
- Maintenance of ion balance
-Homeostatic regulation of pH
-Production of hormones
-Excretion of wastes
what are the 2 types nephrons
1) Cortical Nephron - in cortex
2) Juxtamedullary nephrons - loop of henle and collecting
How much blood is filtered
20%
how much returns to the efferent
80%
The capillaries around the loop of henle
vasa recta
the capillaries around the proximal and distal tubules
peritubular capillaries
Name the order through the nephrons
- afferent capillaries
- Bowmans capsule + glomerulus = renal corpuscle
- proximal tubule
- descending loop of henle
- ascending loop of henle
- distal tubule
- collecting duct
What happens at glomerulus?
180L/day of fluids are filtered
Water, glucose, ions and minerals are all passed through the Bowmans capsule. Blood stays in the renal capsule
what happens proximal tubule?
Reabsorbed:
Na+, Glucose
what happens descending loop of Henle?
water is reabsorbed
what happens ascending loop of henle?
Ions mostly Na is reabsorbed
what happens at the distal tubule?
K+, H+ are secreted and water is reabsorbed if needed
