Lecture 22: Phylogenetics & Macroevolutions Flashcards
What is taxnomy?
The theory and practice of classifications and naming
What are systematics?
The study of biodiversity and the evolutionary relationships among organisms
What is monophyletic group?
The complete set of species derived from a common ancestor
What is paraphyletic group
Contains some, but not all species derived from a common ancestor
What is an ancestral trait?
A trait shared with a common ancestor
What is a derived trait?
A trait that differs from the ancestral trait in a linage
What is homology?
Similar traits due to shared ancestry
What is homoplasy?
Similar traits as a result of convergent evolution
What is convergent evolution?
Structures that resemble each other and perform similar functions but they’re unrelated organisms
What is a clade
A group of organisms believed to have evolved from a common ancestor
