Lecture 22: Introduction to GI system Flashcards
What are the 3 main supplies to the abdominal aorta/organs?
- Celiac trunk = foregut
- Superior mesenteric artery = midgut
- Inferior mesenteric artery = Hindgut
What abdominal organs does the celiac trunk supply?
Supplies superior portion
Left Gatric = liver, stomach & lower oesophagus
Splenic = Stomach, pancreas & spleen
Common hepatic = duodenum, pancreas, liver & pyloric stomach
celiac trunk supplies = liver, stomach, pancreas and spleen
What abdominal organs does the superior mesenteric artery supply?
Supplies = small intestine, ascending colon transverse colon
Colic arteries: ascending & transverse colon
Intestinal arteries: Illeum & Jejunum
Illeocolic artery: Illeum, Cecum and Appendix
- numerous branching to illuem and jejunum
What abdominal organs does the inferior mesenteric artery supply?
Supplies = Retum, descending colon and sigmoid colon
Left colic artery = descending colon
Sigmoid arteries= sigmoid colon
Superior artery = retum and anal cavity
How does venous drainage occur in the Abdominal aorta?
Where does it drain in to?
Venous drainage occurs via the hepatic portal circulation
- a large number of veins feed into the hepatic portal vein
capillaries -> veins –> capillaries –> veins —-> inferior vena cava
What is the primary function of the GI system?
Bring nutrients into the internal environment of the body so that they can be used
What structures make up the GI system?
- Oesophagus
- Stomach
- Duodenum
- Jejunum and Ileum
- Large intestine = ascending, transverse, descending & sigmoid
- Rectum
- Anal canal
What is the peritoneum?
Is a large, continuous see of serous membrane.
Parietal layer = lines the wall of the abdominal cavity
Visceral layer = lines the organs
What is the function of the peritoneum?
It is a serous membrane made up of simple squamous epithelium which secretes serous fluid into the peritoneal cavity making structures slippery and smooth
epithelium –> serous fluid = moist and slippery
What is the mesentery?
- double layer of peritoneal membrane
- epithelium outermost
- from body wall to organ
Is a projection of the parietal peritoneum
What is the Omentum?
- double layer of peritoneal membrane
- epithelium outermost
- from organ to organ
What is the Retroperitoneal?
Behind the peritoneum
What does the lesser and greater omentum do?
- connects what with what?
lesser: connects liver to stomach
greater; connects stomach to transverse colon
