Q

How does venous-occlusion therapy work?

A

Two cuffs.
Wrist cuff has higher pressure than systolic pressure (220mmHg), therefore cutting off blood flow to the hand.
Arm cuff produces a pressure that allows arterial inflow but prevents venous outflow (40mmHg).
Rate of swelling of the arm is proportional to arterial inflow.
This is measured by a gauge around the forearm.

Q

How does thermodilution blood flow measurement work?

A

Insert catheter into vein.
Secretes an ice-cold saline solution.
Rate of change of temperature is proportional to the rate of venous outflow.
Change in temperature is measured by a thermistor.

Q

How does the Doppler Ultrasound measure blood flow?

A

Emits a high frequency wavelength.
This allows the measurement of blood flow.
This is identified by the equation: BF = CSA * RBC Velocity
