Lecture 21 Neoplasia Flashcards
What is meant by neoplasia?
Autonomous new growth of abnormal cells
What is meant by a malignant?
Able to metastasize
What is meant by benign
Not malignant and unlikely to cause harm
What is meant by papilloma
Benign Growth of Epithelial Tissue
What is meant by carcinoma
Matastatic Growth of Epithelial Tissue
Can you describe the following terms:
- Carcinoma
- Sarcoma
- Lymphoma
- Leukaemia
- Melanoma
- Teratoma
Carcinoma - Malignant neoplasm of epithelial tissue
Sarcoma - Malignant neoplasm of connective tissue or muscle
Lymphoma - Malignant neoplasm of lymphocytes
Leukaemia - Malignant neoplasm of leukocytes (or other blood cells)
Melanoma - Malignant neoplasm of melanocytes
Teratoma - Neoplasia comprising of multiple tissues
What are the ten hallmarks of cancer
- Avoiding Immune Structure
- Evading Growth Suppressors
- Enabling Replicative Immortality
- Tumor Promoting Inflammation (Enabling Factor)
- Activating Invasion and Metastasis
- Genomin Inability
- Resisting Cell Death
- Introducing Angiogenesis
- Deregulating Cellular Energetics
- Sustaining Proliferative Signals
What does histogenesis mean?
Cell of Origin
What is meant by benign?
Remains localised with no metastasis
What is a uterine leiomyoma (fibroid)
Growth of the smooth muscle of the uterus
What is borderline neoplasia?
Limited Invasion and Local Destruction that is unlikely to metastasize
What is malignant neoplasia?
Metastasis
What is adenocarcinoma
Growth in the glands that line organs
What is haemotegenous metastasis
Spread of cancer via the blood stream
What is the difference between in-situ neoplasia and invasive carcinoma?
- In-Situ Neoplasia is tumours comprised by the basement membrane
- Invasive Carcinoma has passed through the basement membrane
