Lecture 2.1: Descriptive Epidemiology Flashcards
What is Epidemiology?
The study of the distribution and determinants of health related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to control of health problems
Categorical (Discrete) Data
• Can be divided into group
• Nominal categorise data, no numerical relationship
• Ordered (ordinal) ranking categories
• Interval distance between measures on a scale has meaning
Continuous Data
• Can take any value
• Interval distance between measures on a scale has meaning
• Ratio distance and ratio between measurements are defined
What Frequency Distribution Graph is used for Continuous Data?
Histogram
What Frequency Distribution Graph is used for Discrete Data?
Bar Chart
Summarising Frequency Distribution: Shapes
• Unimodal or Bimodal
• Symmetrical or Skewed
• Large Gaps or Outliers
Summarising Frequency Distribution: Location or Central Tendency
• Mode
• Median
• Mean
• Range
Summarising Frequency Distribution: Spread
• Interquartile Range (IQR)
• Standard deviation (SD)
Measures of Disease Frequency: Point Prevalence
Point Prevalence= No.cases in defined population at one point in time/No.persons in a defined population at the same point in time
