Lecture 20 Flashcards
Explain a simulatneous vocal attack
coordination of adduction and onset of exhalation (airflow) so that they are occuring at the same time
vocal folds reach a critical state of adduction just as airflow is sufficient to produce sound
most efficient type of attack
Describe a breathy vocal attack
starting significant airflow before adducting the vocal folds
occurs frequently during running speech because we keep air flowing throughout production of long strings of words
This is a wasteful breath stream and not too efficient –> over use can give the perception of breathy voice quality
Describe a Hard Glottal Attack
adduction of vocal folds occurs prior to the airflow
like a cough you seal your glottis and tense the larynx which builds up pressrue below the glottis and the release the pressure
produced most often when a word begins with a stressed vowel “Okay, I want the car!”
Miss use of a glottal attack is a hard glottal attck which can damage the vocal folds
To increase the intenstiy of vocal production we need:
increased medial compression
increased respiratory effort
increased sublottal pressure
