Lecture 2 -- Work Flashcards
What is the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics?
There exists, for every thermodynamic system in equilibrium, a property called temperature. Equality of temperature is a necessary and sufficient condition for thermal equilibrium.
How is the Celsius scale defined?
Reference: Freezing and boiling water
100 steps in between, linear interpolation
Define the Kelvin Scale
Reference: Absolute zero, triple point of water
Same step size as Celsius
Define an ideal gas.
An idealized model of real gas. All gases show same behavior. Assumed that gas particles have no volume, all energy is kinetic, and all collisions are fully elastic. Low pressure ideal gases are good models for real gases.
What principle if ideal gas thermometer?
Product of Pressure and Temperature of ideal gas depends only on temperature.
What is Boyle’s observation?
Product of Pressure and Temperature of ideal gas depends only on temperature.
What are the molar and mass forms of ideal gas law?
Molar:
pv_m = R_mT
pV = nR_mT
Mass:
pv = RT = R_m/M T
pV = mRT = mR_m/M T
What are the limitations for ideal gas law?
Applies for low pressure (ideal gas situations) only.
What is the compressibility factor?
The factor that shows the deviation of real gas from ideal gas behavior.
What does it mean if the compressibility factor is smaller than 1?
Real gas is more dense than ideal gas
What is the Virial Expansion?
A taylor series expansion of the compressibility factor.
What is an ideal liquid?
Incompressible and inviscid liquid. Volume constant regardless of temperature and pressure
What is work?
It is part of the energy that is transferred over the system boundary. In a closed system, every energy transfer that is not heat is considered work.
What is the formula for Volume / Displacement work?
w = \int{p dV}
Is Volume / Displacement work path dependent?
Yes
