Lecture 2 -- Work Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics?

A

There exists, for every thermodynamic system in equilibrium, a property called temperature. Equality of temperature is a necessary and sufficient condition for thermal equilibrium.

Q

Define an ideal gas.

A

An idealized model of real gas. All gases show same behavior. Assumed that gas particles have no volume, all energy is kinetic, and all collisions are fully elastic. Low pressure ideal gases are good models for real gases.

Q

What are the molar and mass forms of ideal gas law?

A

Molar:
pv_m = R_mT
pV = nR_mT

Mass:
pv = RT = R_m/M T
pV = mRT = mR_m/M T

Q

What is work?

A

It is part of the energy that is transferred over the system boundary. In a closed system, every energy transfer that is not heat is considered work.

Q

What is technical work?

A

Unlike Volume work, system boundary remains unchanged.

17
Q

What is the formula for technical work?

A

w = \int{m d\omega}

18
Q

What is heat?

A

The part of energy absorbed or released by a system that flows due to difference in temperature

19
Q

What is heat flow?

A

Gradient of heat over time
