Lecture 2: What Is a Drug? Flashcards
1
Q
Explain how a drug works
A
- Drug makes transient physical contact with the receptor
- This causes signal transduction
- The signal transduction causes a cellular response
- The cellular response causes a tissue, organ or whole-body response
2
Q
Whats an example of a biological response to a drug?
A
- Contraction of a muscle
- Secretion of a hormone release or a mediator
- Enzyme activity
- Membrane depolarisation
3
Q
Whats the most effective way to plot drug dosages and effect of drug?
A
Plot it logarithmically to give a sigmoid relationship
4
Q
Whats a “wide” therapeutic index?
A
Means very few people taking an effective therapeutic dose will also experience toxic effects
5
Q
Are drugs and other agonists selective or absolutely specific?
A
Often selective, particularly for closely related receptors
6
Q
Whats the calculation for therapeutic index?
A
