Lecture 2 - The Language of Anatomy Flashcards
All body system contain what?
Organs
The body maintains a constant internal environment by using _________ feedback.
Negative
What does a positive feedback do?
controls infrequent events that do not require continuous adjustment.
What is the anatomical position?
Body is erect with the feet parallel and the arms hanging at the sides with the palm facing forward
Superior vs Inferior
Superior is above
(example: Head is superior to the chest)
Inferior is below
(example: the intestines are inferior to the heart)
Ventral vs Dorsal
Ventral is towards the front of the body
(example: the ribs are ventral to the spine)
Dorsal is facing to the back of the body
(example: the heart is dorsal to the breastbone)
Medial vs Lateral
Medial is towards the center
(the heart is medial to the arm)
Lateral is towards the side of the body
(the arms are lateral to the chest)
Intermediate
Between medial and lateral
the collarbone is intermediate to the breastbone and the shoulder
Proximal vs Distal
Proximal is near to the origin of the body part
(the elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Distal is away from the origin of the body part
(the patella is distal from the femur)
Superficial
External
The skin is superficial to the skeletal muscles
