Lecture 2: Skeletal System and Muscular System Flashcards
What are the 2 components the skeletal system divides into?
The axial and appendicular components
What is the axial skeleton consisted of?
The skull, the rib cage and vertebral column
What is the appendicular skeleton consisted of?
The pectoral girdle, the upper limb bones, the pelvic girdle and lower limb bones
What are the different types of bones?
Long bones Short bones Flat bones Irregular bones Sesamoid bones
What is a Long bone? Give an example.
Long bones are tubular
Ex: Forearm (radius & ulna)
What is a Short bone? Give an example.
Short bones are cube shaped
Ex: Carpal bones in wrist
What is a flat bone? Give an example.
Flat bones usually protect underlying organs
Ex: Pelvis (protects urinary & reproductive systems)
What is an irregular bone? Give an example.
Irregular bones have unique shapes
Ex: Vertebraes
What is a sesamoid bone? Give an example.
Sesamoid bones develop in tendons and are shaped like seeds
Ex: Patella (knee cap) or pisiform (formed in FCU)
