Lecture 2 - Refraction Flashcards
What is refraction?
When light travels through a different medium it can either speed up or slow down
What happens when light travels from glass to air?
It speeds up and moves away from the normal
The angle of refraction is bigger than the angle of incidence
What happens when light travels from air to glass?
It slows down and moves towards the normal
The angle of refraction is smaller than the angle of incidence
What happens when the light travels through a thick lens?
so when the wavefront passes through the lens it gets slower and forms a spherical wavefront
When measuring from the refractive surface to object what is the value?
negative
Define object distance
the distance of the object from the lens axis
Define image distance
the distance of the image from the lens axis
What is l’
image distance
what is l
object distance
What is the focal length
distance between the focal point ad lens
What is the focal point
the point on the optical axis where rays meet
