Lecture 2: Introduction to Neuroanatomy Flashcards
Name the two parts of the nervous system
Central and Peripheral Nervous system
What does the Central Nervous system include
The brain, spinal cord (encased in meningeal layers and bone)
What does the Peripheral Nervous system include
Cranial nerves, spinal nerves, somatic nervous system and visceral nervous system
What is a nerve
a collection of nerve fibres
What is a ganglion
a collection of neuronal cell bodies
What is white matter
collection of myelinated fibres (transmission of information)
What is grey matter
Neuronal cell bodies, dendrites and terminal parts of axons (information processing)
What is a nucleus
a collection of neuronal cells bodies
What is a Cortex
layered grey matter
Name the 4 lobes of the brain
Frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal
What is the frontal lobe responsible for
executive function - manages thinking, emotions, personality etc.
What is the parietal lobe responsible for
sensory processing (taste, hearing, sight, touch and smell) and spatial awareness
What is the temporal lobe responsible for
processing auditory information and language
encoding memory
What is the occipital lobe responsible for
receiving and interpreting visual input
What are the cranial nerves
a set of 12 nerves that send electrical signals between your brain and different parts of your head, face, neck and torso
