Lecture 2 - Geology Hydrology Flashcards
Geology
where in the landscape wetlands are found
Hydrology
the study of water source, flow rates, water budgets, etc…
Drainage Basin
an area that drains into one river/stream
Watershed
line of divide between basins
Reasons for Depressions
tectonics, rivers, glacial action, beaver dams, etc..
Riparian Wetlands
(floodplain wetlands) in floodplains of rivers or streams, receive a lot of surface water during storms and/or snowmelt
- can be marshes, fens, or swamps
Substrate
soil or sediment
Types of soil/sediment
sands, silt, clay
Permeability
the ability of a sediment/soil to transmit water
Clay Soils
smallest on the size scale of soil/sediment, low permeability
Sandy Soils
second largest on the size scale of soil/sediment, high permeability
Hydrological Regimes
descriptions of water source to wetlands
Ombrogenous
precipitation source
Minerogenous
surface and/or groundwater source
- terrigenous, littogenous
Terrigenous
connected to local or regional ground or surface water systems
Littogenous
shoreline of lake river, or ocean
Ombrotrophic
nutrients originate in rain (very low)
