Lecture 2: Factors that affect the rates of reaction Flashcards
What is rate law?
the relationship between RATE and CONCENTRATION
Define FIRST order reaction ( know its expression hint [A])
when the rate of reaction is DIRECTLY proportional to the concentration of reactants;hence if the reactant concentration doubles, the RATE doubles
What is 2nd order reaction?
know its expressio hint: [A]^2
when the rate of the reaction is PROPORTIONAL TO THE SQUARE of the concentration of the reactants; therefore if the concentration of reactants were doubled, the rate will increase by a factor of 4
What is zero order reaction?
when the rate of the reaction is NOT DEPENDENT on the concentration of the reactants at all
What is the proportionality constant called in the RATE LAW
rate constant (k)
what do the units of rate constant depend on?
the ORDER of the reaction
what is the k of 1st order?
s^-1
what is the k of zero order?
mol L-1 s-1
define the rate of a chemical reaction?
the change of concentration per unit time; usually measured in mol L-1 s-1
define instantaneous rate?
average rate: -1/a*delta(A)/delta time
expression of rate
delta [R]/ dt
how do you find the rate law units
rate= -k(A)^of something/ rearrange; algebra; rearrange; simplify by cancelling
how to find the order of the reaction
add the exponents of the reactants
