Lecture 2 - Common Bacterial Infections 2 Flashcards
What does streptococcus mutans cause and what is the treatment?
Grows on plaque on teeth, produces lactic acid causing tooth decay
Treatment - fillings and extractions
What is a tooth abscess and how is it treated?
Infection from tooth decay spreads to the underlying tissue bone
Treatment - antibiotics and dental treatment
What bacteria causes periodontal disease (gum disease)?
Bacteroides, actinomyces
Bacteria colonise between the teeth and the gums, making gums inflamed and bleed
How is gum disease treated?
Good oral hygiene
Name 4 common examples of GI bacteria
E.coli, Salmonella enterica, shigella, campylobacter
Name the 4 types of organisms that cause GI infections
Viral
Protozoa
Parasites
Bacterial
What does Enterohaemorrhagic E.coli do?
Bacteria bind to epithelial cells of large intestine and produce toxins which act on the cells excrete fluid and cause diarrhoea
What do Enterotoxigenic (ETEC) E.coli do?
Bind to epithelial cells of the small intestine, produce plasma asscoiated toxins which act directly on these cells and cause diarrhoea
What does food poisoning result in?
Results from bacterial toxins present in food and not a result of a bacterial infection
When do food poisoning symptoms occur?
When the toxin reaches the small intestine
