Lecture 2: Cognitive Neuroscience Flashcards
1
Q
Cognitive neuroscience
A
The study of the physiological basis of cognition
2
Q
Neurons
A
Cells specialised to create, receive and transmit information in the nervous system
3
Q
Cell body
A
Contains mechanisms to keep cell alive
4
Q
Axon
A
Tube filled with fluid that transmits electrical signal to other neurons
5
Q
Dendrite
A
Multiple branches reaching from the cell body, which receive information from other neurons
6
Q
Nerve nets (2)
A
- Continuously interconnected neurons
- Nonstop communication of signals throughout network
7
Q
Neuron doctrine (3)
A
- Ramon y Cajal
- Individual cells that transmit in the nervous system
- Neurons form neural circuits
8
Q
How do we measure how neurons communicate with each other?
A
Use electronic amplifiers that are sensitive enough to pick up and amplify a single neuron firing
9
Q
Resting potential (2)
A
- When the nerve is at rest
- The difference in charge between the inside and outside of the axon
10
Q
Action potential
A
- Neuron receives signal from environment which briefly raises the relative voltage in the neuron
- Information travels down the axon of that neuron to the dendrites of another neuron
