Lecture 2- Central Nervous System Flashcards
Four generalizations about the cerebral cortex
- contains three functional areas: sensory, motor, association
- each hemisphere controls contra lateral sides
- both hemispheres do not have identical functions
- no functional areas work alone; they need each other.
Cerebral cortex controls…
Conscious mind
Motor areas of cerebral cortex control?
Voluntary movement
Location of motor part of cerebral cortex?
Posterior part of frontal lobes
Four parts of cerebral cortex?
- primary motor cortex
- premotor Cortes
- brochas area
- frontal eye field
Primary motor cortex?
Conscious movement of skeletal muscles
Somatotrophy?
Spacial mapping of motor areas
Premotor Cortes?
Learned functions
Brochas area?
Location of all speech and language
Frontal eye field?
Controls eye movement; voluntary
Primary somatosensory cortex location and function?
Location: post central gyrus of parietal lobe
Function: receives messages from sensory neurons and determines location of the body it is on
Somatosensory association cortex function and location?
Location: lies posterior to primary somatosensory cortex
Function: identifies sensory receptions
Visual association area?
Occipital lobes
Primary auditory cortex location?
Temporal lobes
Olfactory lobe cortex?
Temporal lobe called the uncus
Gustatory cortex location?
Parietal lobe deep to temporal lobe
Prefrontal cortex location and function?
- Anterior portions of frontal lobe
- intellectual learning, personality.
Posterior association cortex function?
- Located in different parts of temporal, occipital and parietal lobes
- receives signals from all sensory areas, written and spoken language, injury
Limbic association area function?
Recognition of fear
