lecture 2; assessing athletic needs Flashcards

1
Q

quantifying athletic fitness (chart/picture)

A
  • putting a number to fitness with a particular ability is important
  • chart allows the simultaneous examination of various fitness scores
  • values from -1–1.8 are standardized scores
  • in order to compare different tests, we need to eliminate units so that’s why we have standardized scores
  • can compare one person’s results to a groups
  • 0 represents the group average

Q

SWOT analysis

A
  • strength, weakness, opportunities, threats
  • internal factors to the APC (strengths and weaknesses)
  • external factors tot he APC (opportunities and threats)
  • data collection: fitness testing (gather info to take next step forward)
  • final product: summarize findings and develop a training plan

Q

PEST analysis: political

A
  • knowledge of laws and regulations that might impact needs and wants of APC
  • college of kinesiologists… need to follow scope of practice (what you can and can’t do)
  • all jobs in this field have a scope of practice
  • working for a facility? an organization? limitations within the environment the practitioner works.facilities have their own limitations.
  • understand policies and procedures

Q

PEST analysis: technological factors

A
  • what does APC currently possess?
  • what tools are available for usage?
  • sometime access to most technological savvy tools might look enticing, however they may not prove to be beneficial in terms of developing an athlete’s program

18
Q

when to use SWOT

A
  • explore new opportunities or solutions
  • training plateaus occur
  • identify decisions for best path forward
  • determine when change is possible- may be resource limited, may have limited access to specialized facilities
  • adjust and re-fine plans mid-course
19
Q

Elements - ask APC to self-assess SWOT; what are their goals? - positives

A
  • strengths
  • assets
  • resources
  • opportunities
  • prospects; may be possible through development pf this program
20
Q

Elements - ask APC to self-assess SWOT; what are their goals? - negatives

A
  • weaknesses
  • limitations
  • restrictions
  • threats
  • challenges they may be experiencing
21
Q

SWOT analysis- internal factors

A
  • Human Resources: assistant coaches, managers, medical staff, etc
  • physical resources: facilities available, equipment
  • financial resources: operation costs, rent payments, sponsors, other revenue streams
  • activities and processes: existing programs you operate, systems you employ
  • past experiences: reputation in the local community and/or profession, facing previous mistakes ( reduce barrier and take them on right away to allow practitioner to learn to a greater extent how not to make that mistake again)
22
Q

SWOT analysis: external factors

A
  • future trends in the filed- short or long-live, everything has a life-span (current training practices/trends that exist now, may not in the future)
  • economy: local, national, and international (identify success for developing program)
  • funding sources: government? industry? sponsor?
  • demographics: changes in target clients? older adults becoming more physically active?
  • physical environment: local facility access, expansions? contractions?-know how the facilities are operating
  • municipal/provincial/federal legislation: easier or harder to do your job as a practitioner?
  • professional events- local, national or international –> can expand access to resources
