lecture 2; assessing athletic needs Flashcards
1
Q
quantifying athletic fitness (chart/picture)
A
- putting a number to fitness with a particular ability is important
- chart allows the simultaneous examination of various fitness scores
- values from -1–1.8 are standardized scores
- in order to compare different tests, we need to eliminate units so that’s why we have standardized scores
- can compare one person’s results to a groups
- 0 represents the group average
2
Q
Coefficients of variations
A
- coefficients of variations are measurements that track the expected variability that carry out through particular events or fitness tests
- table shows coefficient of variation values expressed as %
- expected variation for different tests
3
Q
needs assessment
A
- a process for determining an organization’s needs
- APC= athlete, patient, client
4
Q
3 parts of needs assessment
A
- initiation
- data collection and analysis
- final production
5
Q
overall objective of needs assessment
A
- close the gap where the APC currently is and where they want to be
- determine what is working well in the program
- determine what needs to be changed (minor, major, elimination)
6
Q
needs assessment: initiation
A
- meet with the APC or team, coaches, etc
- identify limiting factors (“framing factors”) –> develop optimal program but you need to know limiting factors
- enter into a verbal and/or written agreement
7
Q
data collection and analysis
A
- PEST analysis 1st
- political, economic, social, technological
- examines macro-level factors about the APC’s environment
- external factors affecting training .. can identify “roadblocks” to training
8
Q
SWOT analysis
A
- strength, weakness, opportunities, threats
- internal factors to the APC (strengths and weaknesses)
- external factors tot he APC (opportunities and threats)
- data collection: fitness testing (gather info to take next step forward)
- final product: summarize findings and develop a training plan
9
Q
PEST analysis: political
A
- knowledge of laws and regulations that might impact needs and wants of APC
- college of kinesiologists… need to follow scope of practice (what you can and can’t do)
- all jobs in this field have a scope of practice
- working for a facility? an organization? limitations within the environment the practitioner works.facilities have their own limitations.
- understand policies and procedures
10
Q
PEST analysis: economic
A
- APC’s resources? your resources?
- justifiable cost? in terms of making the investment to develop this program and meeting the APC’s intentions
- NFL Combine training… up to $10,000/month
11
Q
PEST analysis: social factors
- media
- helpful? useless? harmful? sharing?
A
- external
- social media tools…
helpful?? - assist with training if used properly
useless? -a large collection of into won’t actually add to the benefit of training plan
harmful? - incorrect info on social media, not all scientific info is screened
sharing info? - does hoarding benefit the APC or organization
12
Q
PEST analysis: technological factors
A
- what does APC currently possess?
- what tools are available for usage?
- sometime access to most technological savvy tools might look enticing, however they may not prove to be beneficial in terms of developing an athlete’s program
13
Q
SWOT analysis (what does it stand for?)
A
- strengths
- weaknesses
- opportunities
- threats
14
Q
SWOT - strengths and weaknesses
A
- strengths and weaknesses identify the organization’s training professional’s capabilities
15
Q
SWOT- opportunities and threats
A
- address broader issues, including external factors
