Different isotopes of an element have….
the same atomic number but different number of neutrons
Intrinsic physical properties
color, density
Extrinsic physical properties
mass, volume

Metal characteristics
tend to form cations, very ductile and malleable, good electrical and thermal conductors
Nonmetal characteristics
tend to form anions; wide variety of physical properties
Metalloids
look like metals, but have electrical conductivity intermediate between metals and nonmetals…they are semiconductors.
What is an ion?
an atom or group of atoms with a net electrical charge
Anion
negatively charged ions that are formed by the addition of electrons
Cation
positively charged ions that are formed by the loss of electrons
What is a hydrate?
Compounds that absorb water into their crystalline structure. Formation of a hydrate is generally reversible.
Ionic compound
metal plus one or more nonmetals
