What is literature review and how to conduct it?

A

“The selection of available documents (both published and unpublished) on the topic, which contain information, ideas, data and evidence written from a particular standpoint to fulfil certain aims or express certain views on the nature of the topic and to how it is to be investigated, and the effective evaluation of these documents in relation to the research being proposed.”

  • Shares the results of other studies.
  • Relates the study to the larger dialog in the literature.
  • Provides a framework for establishing the importance of the study.
  • Provides a benchmark for comparing the results to other findings.

  1. Identify the parameters of your search.
  2. Identify the search terms, phrases, key words.
  3. Identify selection criteria for relevant and useful material.
  4. Search in the databases/search engines.
  5. Locate about 50 articles and/or books.
  6. Skim this material and identify relevant publications. Save the relevant material.
  7. Design a literature map.
