Lecture 2 Flashcards
Why do we only record the cusp tips?
because we are using alginate impressions. Alginate has a 75 micron accuracy, polyvinyl has 20 micron accuracy
T/F with centric relation, the mandible is restricted to pure rotary movement?
true
Describe the leaf gague technique concept?
Concept is that with leaf gauge, when the anterior teeth occlude, they disengage posterior teeth, the directional force provided by the elevator muscles (temp, mass, medial pterygoid) seats the condyles in a super anterior position within the fossae
what might happen if the leaf gauge is too rigid?
If the leaf gauge is too rigid, it may provide a posterior slope, deflecting the mandible posteriorly as the elevator muscles contract.
goal of leaf gauge?
deprogram the muscles and make them forget
how should you adjust leaf gauge if patient is severely retrognathic?
If retronathic needs to extend the neck up like CPR-airway management –hyper extend the neck to keep the airway open
does leaf gauge work if you’re prognathic?
no!!!!
So retrognathic adjust with tilting the chin up, but prognathic won’t work!
what is the thickness of the plastic leaves?
.08 mm
once you touch a tooth, what do you do?
add another 5 leaves, then wait another 5 mins
T/F
any authors recommend raising the pin to compensate for the record thickness
FALSE…well many recommend doing this BUT DON’T DO IT!
Can you combine anterior jig with bilateral manipulation technique?
• This technique can be coupled with the bilateral mandibular manipulation technique already discussed. The combination of the bilateral manual manipulation technique and the anterior jig is especially helpful in acquiring an occlusal record for mounting the patient’s cast on an articulator
