Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is the most reliable evidence
-meta analysis
What is a meta analysis
-weights each study based on quality
What does the middle of the diamond on a forest plot represent
-point estimate
What do the squares represent on a forest plot
-sample size
What is relative risk
-probability of a risk in an exposed group/probability of event in not exposed group
What do confidence intervals mean
-95% confident that if you did the study again you would get scores within the intervals
Typical research designs in exercise science
-randomized control trial
-prospective cohort trial
Randomized controlled trials criteria
-study subjects are randomly allocated to receive one or the other treatments
What are efficacy trials
-whether an intervention works in people who receive it
What are effectiveness trials
-whether an intervention works in people who it has been offered
-behaviour change
-real world setting
When to use a prospective cohort trial
-when a randomized control trial would be too expensive cuz its over a long period of time
-or when it would be unethical
Prospective cohort study
-follows over time a group of similar individuals who differ with respect to certain factors under study
Adjustment
-making sure that the measured variable is the only one affecting the outcome
