Lecture 2 Flashcards
Components of the solar system?
The Sun contains >99.8% of the solar system’s total mass, planets have nearly negligible mass fraction
Orbital configuration of the solar system planets?
All planets in the solar system orbit on the same orbital plane: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Terrestrial planets?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Earth’s moon, and Mars
Gas giant planets?
Jupiter and Saturn
Ice giant planets?
Uranus and Neptune
Why do we call Uranus and Neptune ice giant planets?
Because they have a massive mantle made of ices
Why do we call Jupiter and Saturn gas giant planets?
Because they are basically big spheres made mostly of hydrogen and helium
How much denser is Earth compared to Jupiter?
4 times
