Lecture 1a Flashcards
1
Q
Statistics
A
- Science of collecting and interpreting data to make inferences about real world
2
Q
A statistic
A
- the actual numbers that summarize something about real world
- Describe by central tendency, variability, maximum, shape, etc
3
Q
Descriptive Statistics
A
- Describes a phenomenon
- Describes the Range (max- min)
- Ex. Level of monoamine axidase activity in blood
4
Q
Inferential Statistics
A
- Able to make generalized conclusions (usually with experiments or comparing to other natural groups)
5
Q
Significant Result
A
- The result unlikely to have occurred by chance if the null hypothesis is true
6
Q
Null Hypothesis
A
the norm- the status quo
7
Q
Continuous data
A
- measured on a continuous scale
- ex. Height
8
Q
Categorical
A
- Nominal - Discrete Categories
- Ordinal - Natural order (ex. moderate, hard, etc.)
