Lecture 19: Somatosensation Flashcards
1
Q
Types of afferents in somatosensation
A
- somatosensation (skin, touch)
- visceral afferents (guts)
- special senses (vision,hearing)
- chemical senses (olfaction)
2
Q
Divergence for sensory systems and 5 destinations of nociceptive information
A
- sensory cortex via thalamus
- autonomic centers in brainstem/diencephalon
- reticular formation
- cerebellum
- local arc reflexes
3
Q
Conscious somatosensation pathway
A
primary afferent (with DRG), decussates, has to go through thalamus to reach cortex, thalamic relay nucleus, neurons become internal capsule and then end at primary somatosensory cortex
4
Q
Somatotopy
A
neurons are organized in coherent map of the body
5
Q
sensory coding (intensity)
Population code:
A
intensity perceived is proportional to number of receptors activated
