What can cause burns?
A burn is an injury to tissues caused by
heat, electricity,chemicals, light, radiation or friction
What are some of the functions of skin?
- Protection
- Excretion (Of some waste products)
- Thermoregulation
- Synthesis of vit D
- Sensation/ sensory reception
- Blood reservoir: an organ or region containing a significant portion of the blood volume
What is the order of the epidermis? Include the thick skin layer
Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum (Thick skin)
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum basale
What are the four kinds of cells within the epidermis?
keratinocytes, melanocytes, Merkel cells and Langerhan’s or dendritic cells &
Where are Keratinocytes located and what are their function
ALL strata (basale, spinosum, granulosum, lucidum (if present) & corneum)
Toughen, waterproof and protect skin
Where are Melanocytes located and what are their function
Stratum basale
Produce melanin pigment for UV protection
Where are Langerhan’s/dendritic cells located and what are their function
Stratum spinosum
Immune protection
Where are Merkel cells cells located and what are their function
Stratum basale
Detection of light touch sensations
What is the two layers the dermis is divided into?
papillary layer & reticular layer
What is the dermis papillary layer: superficial layer composed of areolar connective tissue
