Lecture 17 - Qualitative data analysis 1 - Coding Flashcards
What are the different approaches to coding? (Braun & Clark + Gioia et al)
Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke) The Gioia method (Gioia et al)
Explain thematic analysis (Braun and Clark)
A method for identifying, analyzing and reporting patterns (themes) in the data.
Organizes and describes the data in rich detail
Interprets various aspects of the patterns identified
What are the 6 phases of an thematic analysis? (Braun & Clark)
- Familiarzing yourself with your dat a
- Generating initial
- Searching for themes
- Reviewing themes
- Defining and naming themes
- Producing the report
Explain inductive coding? (Linneberg, 2019)
Can be seen as a bottom up strategy in which you start by developing codes which generate the themes.
You develop codes based on the data (participants) rather than from the researcher
Explain deductive coding? (Linneberg, 2019)
In here you have already determined your codes before you read through your data. Therefore, you analyse the data and try to assign it to the predefined codes.
You are working with a set of predefined list of codes.
Explain how codes go from codes to theory (Saldana, 2009)
Can be explained by using the model from Saldana, 2009
Codes > category > Themes/concepts > Theory
Explain Gioia’s inductive approach (Gioia et al)
The method try to induce rigor and systematic processes into an inductive research. So that new concepts and linkages can occur
Two cycles of coding
First you do open coding in which you select relevant segments of data. Typically there will be a high number of codes
Second cycle is axial & selective coding. In here you develop categories and ideas about linkages between categories, develop concepts. Also you involve theory and previous research. This will generate a data structure.
What are the advantage of coding? (Linneberg))
It acquire deep, comprehensive and thorough insights into your data
> makes you revisit all aspects of the data
Make the data easily accessible and retrievable
Sorting and structuring you data
Ensuring validity
> ensuring that the questions asked are the questions that have been answered.
Giving a voice to one’s participants.
What are the critics of coding? (Linneberg, 2019)
Breaking data into bits
> Loss of holism, dynamism and complexity
Subjective nature of the coding process
Unsure that the findings from the coding process are valid and relevant
The coder is subjective and therefore the codes chosen can be subjectively chosen
