Lecture 17 ecosystem services Flashcards
Societal Models A (3)
Model A: The economy is within the environment
*green economics: reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. Sustainable development
- ecological economics: A bridge between disciplines beyond just economics and ecology
Societal model B (3)
Model B: they monetary value of the environment
- resource economics: supply and demand allocation of natural resources
- environmental economics: sub-field of economics that is concerned with environmental issues
Societal model C
The economy is all that matters and the environment is an after thought3
Value of earth and value of life debate (2)
1.Selfish (& Economical) reasons: what do boreal regions do for us?
- Valuation: placing a monetary value or worth on something that is not traded on a market
2.Moral reasons: effects on boreal life/ecosystems
Moral vs economics (2)
Nature has intrinsic value (ECO)
Vs Nature has value only in regard to its s suse to humans (EGO)
Why bio diversity matters (4)
- Human survival is dependent on other species
- Ecosytem goods and services are provided by biodiversity
- We don’t know how many species we need for human well-being
- We are currently in ecological debt
What is the total value of the worlds ecological systems
31-100 trillion CAD a year
Ecosystem services of bio diversity; provisioning
Services that describe the energetic and material outputs of ecological systems. Includes things like food water and other resources
Ecosystem services of bio diversity; regulators
Ecosystem services as regulators ie. how trees help to regulate air quality
Ecosystem services of bio diversity; habitat
Maintains diversity by providing living spaces for plants and animals
Ecosystem services of bio diversity; Cultural
Non-material benefits people gain from ecosystems ie recreation and mental health
