Lecture 17 Flashcards
1
Q
What are some functions of the smooth muscle?
A
- Regulating blood pressure
- Peristalsis in the digestive system
- Ciliary muscles in the eye
- Pilo-erection
2
Q
How is contraction regulated?
A
Synaptic inputs from ANS Circulating and local hormones Metabolites Electrical activity of neighbouring cells Gap junctions Unitary
3
Q
What are the sarcolemma pathways for regulating Ca2+
A
- Voltage gated calcium channels
- Ligand gated channels
- Store operated Ca2+ channels
4
Q
How does the regulatory light chain work in controlling cross bridge cycling
A
There is an extra step for smooth muscle. When myosin is phosphorylated by myosin light chain kinase the myosin is activated. Deactivation occurs which myosin phosphatase.
