What is antenatal care?
Planned examination and observation of a woman from conception until birth
What is antenatal care trying to prevent?
Trying to prevent maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity
What is the importance of antenatal care?
Important to detect and treat complications of pregnancy.
Important to educate women about labour, looking after a baby and lactation
What are the nice guidelines for the first appointment with a healthcare professional following conception?
Give info on folic acid supplements
Food hygiene e.g. no soft cheese
Lifestyle factors e.g. smoking and alcohol
Info on screening
What signs are associated with preeclampsia?
Raised blood pressure - (>140/90)
Proteinurea (at least +1 on dipstick test)
How is preeclampsia managed?
Best form of treatment is delivery
Antihypertensives e.g. nifedipine
Fluid restriction
Magnesium sulphate to prevent and treat seiures.
