Define tragedy
A protagonist of high social status falls from grace, partially his or her own fault
Define Hamartia:
A heros tragic flaw
Define comedy:
A genre of complex qualities involving humor.
Define Tragicomedy
A mixed genre with elements of Tragedy and comedy
What is dialogue?
Spoken words “lines”
Define exposition:
Part of the plot containing necessary background information
Define point of attack
Event within the plot that begins the primary root conflict, sets up a problem that the protagonist must solve or a question that must be answered
Define climax
Highest moment of intensity when conflict is resolved or dramatic question is answered
Who writes the script of a play
The playwright
What does a dramaturg do for a production?
The person who provides the research and development of a play, multiple responsibilities including a lot of research and presenting information.
What makes up the total vision elements of the play, everything the audience sees?
Mise-en-scene
In class we discussed three styles of the theatrical stages where are they and what’s different about each from the others
A. Thrust Stage: audience on 3 sides of stage/ playing arena
B. Arena Stage: surrounds stage/playing arena
C. Proscenium Stage: audience on 1 side of stage, views action through frame

Four functions of lighting
- Selective visibility: lighting what the production needs the audience to see, unimportant areas left in shadow
- Rhythm and Structure: indicate rise and fall in action, reinforce themes, structure, etc.
- Mood: atmosphere of the scene/production
- Illusion and Motivation: create time and space effects
