Lecture 15: Motor cortex and movement Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the basic motor pathways and their functions
A
They control basic (gross/proximal) movements, posture and tone, locomotion as well as balance and equilibrium.
Reticulospinal tract
Controls posture and locomotion
- Arises from the reticular formation
- Control the activity of both alpha and gamma motor neurones
Vestibulospinal tract
Controls balance and equilibrium
- originate in the vestibular nuclei
- synapse in the ventral horn of spinal cord and project to somatic muscle via alpha and gamma motor neurones.
