Lecture 14 Flashcards
Communities
groups of interacting species at the same place and time
Subsets of species can be defined by:
taxonomic affinity
guild
functional group
Guild
group of species that uses the same resources
Functional group
species that function in similar ways, but with different resources
Species richness
of species in a community
Species evenness
relative abundances compared to one another
Species diversity
combines species evenness and richness
Rank abundance curve
plot the proportional abundance of each species relative to the others in rank
Species composition
identity of a species in a community
Species accumulation curve
species richness is plotted as a function of the total #of individuals that have been counted
Trophic cascade
a consumer is indirectly facilitated by a positive interaction between its prey and a different species
Competitive networks
competition between all species impacting them all negatively; hard for a single species to dominate
Interaction Strength
magnitude of the effect of one species on the abundance of another
Foundation Species
have large affects on other species, & thus diversity, by virtue of their considerable abundance or biomass
Ecosystem engineers
create, modify, or maintain physical habitat for themselves & other species
