Lecture 14 Flashcards
At a long studied oilfield near Medicine Hat what was the ultimate treatment they have found which works to prevent oil souring.
7- produced water weekly with alternating doses of nitrate of low (200ppm) to high (1000ppm)
Define Corrosion
Define Corrosion in the context of the oil field
- An interaction between a material and its environment, resulting in the degradation of that material
- An electrochemical process between metal and its abiotic and biotic environment, resulting in it being oxidized.
How much does it cost Canada’s energy transmission pipeline industry to monitor and maintain pipelines?
~ $2.9 Billion CAD/ year
What is the main infrastructure of the oil and gas industry made of? (gathering pipelines, transmission lines, injection plants, storage tanks, refineries etc)
Carbon steel, a material which can be corroded.
Arrange the pipeline types from smallest to largest in diameter.
- Distribution lines
- Gathering lines
- Feeder lines
- Transmission lines
What does MIC stand for?
Microbiologically influenced corrosion. Not induced because it is very rare to find an example of corrosion solely due to microbiological activity.
Give the anodic, cathodic, and overall reaction of iron corrosion.
pg 4
What are the four essential elements required for corrosion/ an electrochemical cell?
- Anode
- Cathode
- Electrolyte
- Conductive (metallic) path
When/ where do the Anodic and Cathodic reactions occur in relation to one another?
They occur simultaneously in the same location
pg 5
- What is the most well studied corrosion influencing microbe type?
- What are other, less well studied types?
- SRM
- NRM (oNRM/ soNRM)
- Iron- associated bacteria
- fermentative organisms/ syntrophs
- Acetogens
- Methanogens
