Lecture 13 - Thalamus Flashcards
1
Q
Thalamus
A
- connects just about every brain structure with just about every other brain structure
- relays and processes information
- particularly important for most of the senses
2
Q
Anterior nucleus
A
- Anterior division
- input from limbic system
- outputs to cingulate gyrus –> hippocampus (entorhinal)
- emotion, cognition
3
Q
Lateral dorsal nucleus
A
- Lateral division
- input from limbic system
- outputs to cingulate gyrus –> hippocampus (entorhinal)
- emotion, cognition
4
Q
Mediodorsal nucleus
A
- Medial division
- input to olfactory cortex and spinothalamic tract
- output to olfactory inputs go to insular and orbitofrontal cortex
- cognition (memory), emotion, flavor
5
Q
Pulvinar and Lateral posterior nuclei
A
- Lateral division
- inputs from many sensory systems
- output to association cortex
- attention to visual and other stimuli
- lesion causes hemineglect
6
Q
Ventral later and ventral anterior nuclei
A
- Ventral division
- inputs from cerebellum, globus pallidus, substantia nigra
- output to cortical areas 4 and 6
- motor function (both association and primary)
7
Q
Ventral posterior, VPL, VPM
A
- Ventral division
- inputs from medial lemniscus, spinothalamic tract, trigeminothalamic tract, solitariothalamic tracts
- outputs to somatosensory cortices (3, 1, 2) and some area 4, as well as taste to insular cortex
- pain+temp+somatosensation and flavor
8
Q
Medial geniculate
A
- Ventral division
- inputs from inferior colliculus
- outputs to auditory cortex (areas 41 and 42)
- hearing
9
Q
Lateral geniculate
A
- Ventral divison
- inputs from retinal ganglion cells
- outputs to visual cortex (area 17)
- vision
10
Q
Centromedian
A
- Intralaminar divison
- inputs from Globus Pallidus and Nigra, spinal cord (reticular formations)
- output to motor cortex and striatum
- ascending arousal system
11
Q
Blood supply
A
tuberothalamic artery posterior choroial artery paramedian artery thalamogeniculate artery -branches from P. comm, PCA and MCA
