Lecture 12: Emotion Flashcards
Emotion and Motivation cycle / relationship
Emotion can lead to motivation
ex: feeling anxious about failing a class so you feel more motivated to study
In return, Motivation impacts emotion
ex: Really motivated to do well in a class because you care about your GPA. This drive to succeed is sufficient to causing emotions like anxiety
What are the three components of emotion
Physiological Component
Cognitive component
Behavioral Component
Physiological component prepares us for ________________
our fight or flight response
The Physiological component involves the autonomic nervous system which ____________________
Its composed of two parts
1.
2.
(Name and describe them )
these systems help us ______ _____ _____ _______
Mobilizes the body for action and then calms it when crisis has past
1.Sympathetic Nervous system
- prepares us for a fight or flight response
- Parasympathetic Nervous System
- calms the body down brining it back to a state of homeostasis
These systems help us feed into our emotions
What do Polygraphs detect? and How?
what are some errors with polygraphs? (in terms of people and crimes)
They detect emotions by monitoring autonomic arousal
Pathological liars might not show results but high anxiety filled people might show results because of their flight or fight response even if they are not guilty of a crime.
Cognition can define ______
emotion
Spillover effect
Arousal response to one event influences our response to another event
ex: good news and arousal after a workout leads to more excitement
(think emotions spilling over into more emotions)
Schachter and Singer experiment (1962)
injected college students with epinephrine then sent them to a second room with another person acting in a super happy way or unhappy way. As participants observed this they began to report heart racing, hot faces, and rapid breathing.
1/2 was told epinephrines side effects like hard to breathe etc.
1/2 was told no side effects
those told the injection would cause the to feel faces flush, reported no emotion apart of description. Those who had the were told no side effects of the injection reported face hot but also euphoria of irritable Emotions caught from other person in the room
True or False: Some emotional responses do not require conscious thinking
True
Many of our emotional reactions are ________ and ________
Automatic and emotionless
Is it difficult to change emotional responses that are automatic?
yes
Behaviorally emotions are expressed through ______ ______ and ______ ________
expression of emotion is ______ / ______ ______ by observation. It is also the ______ cross __________
- Facial expressions and body language
- innate/not learned, same cross culturally
Facial-Feedback Hypothesis
Posits that facial muscles send signals to the brain that help it recognition the emotion being experienced
Cross culturally there are:
- ____________in the ability to differentiate _______ expressions of emotions
- __________ in the categorization of emotions
- Similarities, facial
-differences
ex: new guinea; no word for depression–> symptoms not categorized as depression if there is no word
20% US depression
2% China depression
