Lecture 11: Sexual Selection Flashcards
1
Q
Define ‘amphimixis’.
A
The union of two genomes, usually carried by gametes, followed at some later time by reduction.
2
Q
What are the costs of sex?
A
- Recombination breaks up favourable gene combinations - costs valuable time and energy that could be used on survival, growth or asexual reproduction -inefficient for population growth because males cannot physically produced offspring.
3
Q
Define ‘isogamy’.
A
Gametes are all the same size.
4
Q
Define ‘anisogamy’.
A
Sexes differ in their gamete sizes.
5
Q
Define ‘Muller’s Ratchet’.
A
In the absence of recombination, mutations and damage accumulate over time and can’t be purged.
