lecture 11 - occlusion Flashcards
malocclusion
bad occlusion
deviation from idea
angles classes of occlusion
class I
class II
class III
what do we look at to define the class on occlusion
permanent first molars and the canines if molars are missing
idea class I occlusion
- mesial buccal cusp on the maxillary first molar is aligned with the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar
- maxillary canine fits between mandibular canine and premolar
orthognathic profile
class I
class II malocclusion
disto-occlusion
mandible to small or maxilla too large
result = mandible that is behind where it should be
how big of a different does alignment have to be to be considered a different class
at least a premolar length
class II division I “overjet”
mandible is retruded and ALL maxillary incisors are protruded (stick out)
class II division II “overbite”
mandible is retruded and ONE OR MORE maxillary incisors are retruted (tilted in)
retrognathic profile
class II
class III malocclusion
mandibular arch is anterior to the maxillary arch
result = mandible in front of where it should be (creates anterior cross bite)
other names for class III malocclusion
under jet, under bite, anterior cross bite
prognathic profile
class III
tooth out of alignment to the labial
labioversion (anterior)
buccoversion (posterior)
tooth out of alignment to lingual
linguoversion
