Your brothers son wants you to council him, he will speak only to you - fo you council him ?

What are ethics ?
Traditionally part of philosophy dealing with morals and judgments
Often a gap between ideal outcomes and realistically what can be accomplished
In context of counselling - professional association of professional practice and standards
Ethical principals
Autonomy - right of freedom of action and choice, as long As it doesn’t interfere with rights of others
Above all - do no harm!
Justice - equal and fair treatment
Fidelity making honest promises and commitments to clients - avoid deception
Beneficence - accepting responsibility for promoting what is good for others
Informed consent
Confidentiality
Limits to confidentially ( harm to self or others )
Therapist must acknowledge rights expectations and understanding of each family member
Ethical practice
Aware of influence of own cultural, religious and gender related awareness
Operate within the law
Understand laws regarding mandatory reporting of child abuse
Practice within scope of confidence
Referral of clients to other therapist when required
Special conditions with families
Informed consent when a family member discloses something and doesn’t want family to know
