Lecture 10: The Immune System Flashcards
What are factors from immune system protect your body?
think of a castle
Physical Barriers (non-immune) Skin, mucous membranes, etc.
The Innate Immune System
Inborn mechanisms
The Adaptive Immune System
Learned or designed in response to something new
What is the immune system and how?
The function of your immune system is to keep you alive
Tolerance vs Response
Self or Non-Self
Harmless or Dangerous
What does it mean when improper cells invade the body ?
It’s called autoimmune diseases
What are the functions of a antibody?
Antibodies attach to antigen forcing them to clump together. Prevents the pathogens to enter the host.
Which response produces more antibodies?
Secondary response
Why get vaccinated?
You have a secondary response (memory)when you encounter the pathogen.
What is the purpose of B cells when encountering an antigen?
What are the differences between primary vs. secondary antibodies?
Primary antibodies identical sequences. Secondary antibodies exhibit variation and varies in affinity allowing the high affinity binding can kill effectively.
How do antibodies produced by B cells contribute to an immune response?
2 types of response antibodies attach to antigens, to prevent pathogens to enter a host cell.
Which response produces B cells and why?
2nd immune response has a high concentration and the memory B cells are produced antibodies due their affinity antigen compared to primary response B cell.
Can vaccine alter your primary response to an antigen ?
Allows you make memory B cells that allow you to fight off the infection 2nd time you see the pathogen.
What binds allergens to start an immune response?
antibodies
When do you have the highest antibody production ?
Secondary response
Which components of the immune system do you expect to have the fastest response to an invading pathogens?
Innate immune system
What factors allow the secondary immune response to be larger than primary response?
Memory B cells can produces many antibody producing B cells and many of secondary B cells have higher affinity for the antigen than the primary response B cells.
