What are the two types of creativity?
Superficial and deep
Which type of creativity links to openness? And is helped by intelligence overall?
Superficial
Give some examples of superficial creativity? How do we normally come about this kind of superficial creativity?
Fashion, pop music, art - anything mass media
We learn this kind of creativity, a lot of it is trial and error, involving novelty and uses ore-developed strategies
What underpins deep creativity?
Psychoticism and is helped by high intelligence
Who do we normally associate with deep creativity?
Geniuses, they manage to derive something new hat is not directly derived from the past - originality
List a few people you would consider genius
Beethoven, Shakespeare, Rembrandt
Newton and Darwin, both sparked scientific revolution
How is superficial creativity selected for in the population?
Likely to be sexually selected, a similar idea to the peacocks tail, the better you are at creativity like that the more mates or the higher quality mate you are able to acquire
How is deep creativity selected into the population?
Likely something to do with group selection. The individual geniuses reproduction success is diminished, but the benefit the overall groups reproductive success.
What are 6 qualities associated with someone who is high in openness?
- Active imagination
- Aesthetic sensitivity
- Attentive to inner feelings
- Neophile
- Intellectual curiosity
- Political views are progressive and normally left wing
List 6 traits that are associated with people who are high in psychoticism
- Cold and impersonal
- Unempathetic and egotistical
- Defiant, eccentric, aggressive
- Independent and asocial
- Impulsive (not conscientious)
- Thinking style is dream like or associative
What does high psychoticism correlate with? (4)
Correlated with: Increased rate of psychotic illness Psychopathic personality disorder Alcoholism / binge drinking Addictions
What are the 3Is of psychoticism ?
Intelligence

Inner motivation
explain intelligence as one of the 3Is
High intelligence implies good genes, few deleterious mutations and provides evidence for a highly efficient brain.
Those high in psychoticism and creativity are often very intelligent
Explain how intuitive thinking is one of the 3Is
Intuitive thinking refers to a persons ability and likelihood to rely on inner thoughts, dreams, visualisations and hunches when they think. Not really psychotic thoughts but you are vulnerable to develop them into something more psychotic.
