Q

What are the 9 guiding principles that guide social and emotional well being for First Nations’ people according to the Strong SEWB framework.

A

They were arrived by a national consensus of First Nations peoples.

There are cultural, historical, social, political determinants.

5 of the guiding principles are cultural determinants.
When the harmony of the interrelation between the cultural determinants is disrupted then SEWB problems will arise or persist. Examples of SEWB problems are family violence, substance mis-use, or suicide. These are not mental health problems from this perspective.

The inner circle of the framework are the strengths of First Nations’ holistic concept of health and well-being. The outer circle represents some of the challenges that influence whether well being is present or SEWB problems emerge or persist.

The inner circle represent the cultural determinants of SEWB and the outer circle represent the historical, social, and political determinants.
