Lecture 10 Flashcards
Occlusal equilibrium
Balance occlusion or contacts*
Balance occlusion or contacts*
- To improve functional and esthetic relationships between maxillary and mandibular teeth.
- To eliminate TMD.
Functional = .
act of biting down, movement
Permanent occlusal therapy is indicated only when significant evidence exists to support that the occlusal condition is an
etiological factor. One should not routinely alter occlusion without such evidence.
Generally, the best choice is to perform the least amount of
dental alterations that will fulfill the treatment goals.
Options for fixing occlusal equilibrium
- Selective grinding
- Fixed prost.
- Orthodontic therapy
- Orthognathic surgery
*3 and 4 usually done together.
How to grind:
Look at VO, move and hit something.
rule of 3
Selective grinding = first third
Fixed prosth = 2nd third
Ortho = 3rd third
Factors influencing treatment planning
- symptoms
- condition of the dentition
- Systemic health
- esthetics
- finances
Selective grinding
enamel only
Direction of the slide
the shorter the slide, the more likely that selective grinding will work.
Horizontal slide
difficult to get this to work with just selective grinding.
Diamond burs used for .
grinding.
Grinding: do NOT go into dentin
Tripodization
exactly what it sounds like
The more frontal from the muscles, you get less
force.
So, you want to protect poterior with anterior.
