lecture 1 - tissue types Flashcards
What are the four main types of tissue
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
What type of tissue is skin?
Epithelial
What are the two forms of Epithelial tissue?
Epithelia and Glands
What are the two types of glands?
Exocrine and Endocrine
What are the functions of Epithelial tissue? (4)
Protection, controls permeability, sensation, secretion.
What are the 3 types of connective tissue?
Connective tissue proper, fluid connective tissue and Supporting connective tissue
What are the functions of connective tissue? (5)
Structure, transport of fluids/materials, organ protection, energy storage, microorganism defence
What are two main fibres of Connective Tissue Proper?
Collagen Fibers and Elastic/Elastin fibres
What are the two types of Connective tissue proper?
Loose and Dense
Ligaments and tendons are what type of Connective Tissue Proper?
Dense (Dense fibrous connective tissue)
What is adipose tissue, and what does it do?
Fat tissue, stores energy
What are three important types of loose Connective Tissue proper?
areolar tissue, adipose tissue, reticular tissue
What are the two main types of Fluid Connective tissues?
Blood and lymph
What are the two main types of Supporting Connective Tissues?
Cartilage and bone
What are the three types of Cartilage?
Hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
What is the main function of muscle tissue?
Contraction for movement
What are the three main types of Muscle tissue?
Skeletal, Cardiac, Smooth
What is the function of Skeletal muscle?
Attaches to bones allowing for consciously controlled movement.
What is the function of cardiac muscle?
Allows the heart to beat.
Where is cardiac muscle found?
In the heart
Where is smooth muscle found?
The inner organs
What are the functions of nervous tissue?
Conduct electrical impulses, carry information
What are the two main cell types of nervous tissue?
Neurons and glia
What is the overall role of Glia?
To support neurons (maintain structure, repair, provide nutrients, etc.)
What are the 3 parts of the Human Tissue Act 2008?
Voluntary donation, dual consent by donor and immediate family member, Usually held for 18 months but may be held longer for teaching and research
